A lot of you guessed pretty well as to where the little town most of the comic takes place in is. But I wanted to know where Metropolis was.

duLapel guessed "Forest City, Iowa". I'm curious as to his reasoning, and it was by far the best guess. It's a bit far east, but otherwise spot on.

Why? Because that's the only area that the Ho-chunk are still sometimes known as the Winnebago. Sheeeesh, obvs.

duLapel gets a sketch. He can message me, or leave a comment. I thought he might win one of these.

Good job on 200. And where I live a winnebago is a vehicle! So we will learn who Jim just met soon right? I don't recognize him. Also I see you have a little thumbnail next to the url now, sexy eyes.

Yeah, slowpoke, it's been there for... two hours.

That long? Damn. That's 120 whole minutes. I'm more preoccupied about going to see a surgeon tomorrow than I thought I was!

Wait is the Jim being arrested and the Jim now the same person? or was there a flashback transition?
view 18th Jan 2012, 1:32 AM edit delete reply
There's only one Jim, only one Marina, and only one Piers. There's just a lack of transitions. I didn't think it'd be as confusing as people seem to find it...

Ok. We don't know this "Piers" yet. Right? He was never mentioned before now? I don't mean to come across as a complete dumbass here...

If you go by themed names, it's obvious...
JasperWB 18th Jan 2012, 1:51 AM edit delete reply
Marina...piers? Siblings then?

Yeah, he's the blond guy.

And the smoker. Well at least I figured something out. Time to quit while I'm ahead.

Forest City, Iowa is the county seat of Winnebago County and it is also the headquarters of Winnebago Industries, a manufacturer of infamous motorhomes... perfect for refugees. Anyway I looked for the most obvious unique clues and Winnebago Jim was at the top. Do a cross-section of geographical references and Forest City, Iowa pops out... that was the reasoning anyway.

The other possibility was the subtle clue of Vett's disease being a prion syndrome caused by nanoparticles. At this moment, Mayo Clinic is exploring the use of nanoparticles in the treatment of various diseases. That pointed to Rochester, MN... unfortunately Rochester is more than 80 miles from Forest City, so a poor match for the more obvious clue.

Of course there was a perfect intersection of both these locations... right in-between and surrounded with lakes... but I said to myself "duLapel, your over thinking this... again!" So I used Occam's razor and cut to the quick of the matter... Why would view pull out of thin air an honorific like Winnebago Jim...

Jesus! I just figured he was set up in a winnebago or it was a stupid online handle. Like my screenname here. I came up with it a number of years back with the equivalent of tossing a dart at a phonebook. Holy hell almighty that conclusion is amazing but damn the thought power needed to get there.
ZombieDerf 18th Jan 2012, 8:27 AM edit delete reply
yeah, I looked up the same thing for wineebago. but I was trying to connect it to the world bank hacker stories and maybe get a connection. but I just fell back to iowa....then kept my mouth shut

Jim's name isn't "Winnebago", it's the name the media gave him.

Anyway, pretty good guess!
elfolampo 18th Jan 2012, 7:03 AM edit delete reply
Well, in all honesty, I just thought Winnebago was his family name. Mainly because I don't remember if Jim's full name was ever mentioned before.

I chose Wisconsin because of the Winnebago thing, and your characters mentioned 'Central Park' and I only found one for Wisconsin. I had considered Iowa but the whole central park idea made me go for the former, and I didn't consider the terrain/climate much seeing has everything has gone awry in the viewniverse anyway.

I'm going to go with Baton Rouge, Louisiana, because she said that 'their homes sank' and since Louisiana is a low lying state next to a bunch of water, well...yeah. Also, Polis is Creole for Police. Am I close?
