Swears in this comic are kind of difficult for me. The cultural progression has led away from "discriminatory" swearing such as bitch, fag, dick, etc.

There are a few "nondiscriminatory" swears that translate fine - fuck, shit, ass, etc. However, there are also loads of new swears invented in the "robotic age". The problem is that they aren't familiar, so if I use them, it sounds like I'm doing swear substitution...

On another note, the pressed-up-against-glass thing is actually not so easy to draw!

Wow. He screwed up big time. That was a damn shitty note to go out on.

Also, I like the boobs under the shirt thing. One of those details that you don't notice as awesome till its no longer there!

God I'm a dumbass. I can't type anymore it seems. I meant the way they show through.

I'm just going to shut up from now on. I think that'd be best for everyone...

Blue ovaries in the moonlight... or confusing dreams are coming!

Curses and expletives evolve with time and cultural mixing... fuck is a great example!

I don't know the cultural mix but let me suggest the Japanese expletive baka instead of ass... Baka has a rich mix of meanings that is strangle appropriate to this situation. (an asterisk and terse definition foot note make the new word clear to the audience)

Noun
馬鹿 (hiragana ばか, romaji baka)
*unintelligent and foolish; also, such a person
*useless, futile
*a type of bivalvia: Mactra chinensis; see bakagai
*a tool used for counting coins

I don't mind clumsy comments... I just like the words "boobs under the shirt ."

Poor Mary...
situation reminds me of a song by Above & Beyond. "Can't sleep"

@duLapel: there are two reasons I can't use baka (or any other Japanese swears). One is because of the way Japanese culture pops up in the story. The other reason is meta: using Japanese terms in a webcomic is a bit... :P

@Kill3st: I've never heard that song before, but it's pretty good! On the "can't sleep" side of things, I actually like the Eels, despite it being used in a movie once. It, uh, doesn't exactly fit this scene, though!

I agree with the sentiment on using gratuitous Japanese. It kinda turns me off when I hear someone using it in place of English words. Of course, I get the same feeling with gratuitous English from the other side.

On that note, it can work. See Firefly with Chinese. Though, I think the Japanese/Western culture mix would have to be made clearer before you could get a mix similar to that of Firefly. It was hardly on my radar.

There IS no Japanese/Western culture mix, that's kind of an important point.

In fact, there's not really any kind of cultural diversity: the culture may appear somewhat diverse, but that's just because it's unfamiliar. This is a small, insulated town. It has a small, insulated culture.

Well, that certainly would explain why I wouldn't pick up on it; it doesn't exist in the first place.

I'll go derp into my pillow now. Can't wait for the next page.

Damn what I would not give to have a bedroom like that, where I can sleep blissfully to the moonlight.

I understand your meta reasons for not including Japanese words in your comic, but one must admit from a linguistic perspective that some ideas are just better conveyed by an alternate language.
