"It's just nasty mud."

It really is.

Apparently derelict spider tanks make good incubators!

Well, it's not that straightforward, but you know me: it'll only be vaguely explained after the fact.

Mutant XVT tolerant slime mold?!

Did it cut or did it dissolve Hans's hands?

Molecular wire.

All edge! So it is partly mechanical and strongly self protective. Hans must have been squeezing it in a sensitive spot.

Edit: Not mechanical then. Nor a caustic agent. That's good!

Organic molecular wire - protein wire.

Oh I see now. Those are his fingers. Well now even if he escapes the rest of the mess coming out he will still need considerable repairs. Interesting he doesn't seem to feel pain or even any indication about what is happening to his hands before he sees it. Leads me to wonder if its a robot thing, the action moved faster than I thought, or that wire has some kind of organic analgesic or disruptor chemical.

Though small and kind of hard to see, Hansel's face in the last panel is priceless.

If I could offer a small piece if criticism though, the transition from the last page action to this page struck me as a real jump. Hans comes out of nowhere to suddenly be in the middle of work with Jim and it just seems to really stick out to me at least. And it could be me as it doesn't strike me as all that bad and it makes sense with keeping the pacing up for the action at the end of this page, but still something about the first panel seems a bit of a jump from the last page.

Don't know if this is a complete miss, but the stuff reminds me of when you have to clean the shower drain and there's all the hair and stuff stuck down there. Just my observation.

Spider Tank Silk! That would make an excellent antipersonnel weapon... It would also explain the robot tanks curious name...

Well Jim avoided going to pieces... but at what cost?

This concept reminds me very strongly of Niven's molecule chain, but with an organic twist. Its like some creamy peanut butter offered me some chocolate while make a sandwich with it. . .Well, maybe not EXACTLY like that.

Is it really chasing them or did Hans basically grab it by its testicle equivalents with what are essentially a pair of vice grips?

Also, I think this action is happening a few days later.

To be more specific, they were cleaning out the tank and something very large, potentially protist or fungal, just relieved Hansel of his digits via razor silk.
