Hey, I might have lied when I didn't label this comic as violent.

But the violence is done, now!

Gratz to Gigan, who guessed it. If he wants a sketch, he can have one.

Yow! And the round went into the lake. That could be big trouble! Does XVT dilute quickly, or is it like gasoline where a small amount can pollute a large volume of water?

Landwalker is a hero! I hope he was riding real low in his environment container. Also that he had blast proof hatches in his torso!

I sure hope the Octopuses were heading for higher ground too!

Given what we know about it, it acts like a catalyst. Even a minute amount of it is deadly. Since its effects are immediate, it's probably deadly even at small ppb (parts per billion)
cattservant 4th Jun 2012, 11:18 PM edit delete reply
At least they have neutralizing agents and clean up bacteria if they can apply them quickly enough to contain the damage. I'm worried about the Octopuses too!

so umm.. who's head was that?

Sigh... I really went out of my way to make it obvious, too. I can't figure out how to make things more clear.
cattservant 4th Jun 2012, 10:35 PM edit delete reply
That was Landwalker the dwarf octopus. Take a look at (Pages 312-313,316 and 319) and for some background (Pages 013-014).

Sometimes people just won't get it view. Don't take it personally.

The point is that if someone doesn't get it, that's bad.
cattservant 4th Jun 2012, 11:05 PM edit delete reply
Yes, but sometimes folks will show up at a marble shoveling contest with a pitchfork...

to be perfectly honest, i was about to ask who just died before i read View's notes and looked up what Gigan said last page.

obvious it wasn't. i don't think i would've guessed it myself had i tried, either.

sorry View..

I will say that the reason I didn't get it is the lack of seeing the character in the previous strips up to the call to arms page, where I failed to notice the landwalker standing there in the middle, but for some reason inventoried who was running either way. So in my head, only the people running towards the tank were present and the landwalker was overlooked.

The character's head shatters like glass due to the impact of the projectile, which I thought was a very strong indication of who it is; after all, we got lots of nice close-ups of the Landwalker's glass dome in a bunch of fairly recent pages. I did also notice the Landwalker standing there in the previous pages, and to be fair, I think I may have noticed this after reading comments pointing this out... If not for that, perhaps I would have been confused as well. Still, I think the glass dome thingy is a good visual indicator.

I do have to admit, though, that it took me a while to realise that the Landwalker was throwing themselves on the bullet for Mary; initially I assumed the Landwalker hadn't moved, and the hit was an accident. I did eventually piece the dynamic pose and the hand visible in the previous panel together, though. :P It's the angles and stuff.

Well, I thought it was obvious -- especially since we saw the landwalker standing around while everyone else ran.

By the way, am I correct in guessing that the reason HE didn't run is because the octopi didn't go through the same WMD drills that all the humans and robots did?
pancake 5th Jun 2012, 11:00 AM edit delete reply
i was looking through the history, the only place Landwalker is shown since the whole recent drama started was in the last panel of Call to Arms, and it's not even clear that it's Landwalker due to it being such a long shot. he's not seen again until another long shot in Shoot, then he dies. it was hard to notice for those who weren't activly looking.
cattservant 5th Jun 2012, 9:20 PM edit delete reply
Either that or the octopuses have different thought processes and/or priorities.

Call me sentimental, but I don't think he's dead yet.

Hero octopus saves mom!

That transparent dome must have been insanely tough to deflect a tank shell. O_o I am hoping that the octopus will somehow survive, but it seems unlikely, since we know XVT can poison water ("it gets into the groundwater and everything dies!"), and we know the shell was contaminated with it, and left a little cloud of death around the landwalker suit as well.

Also, those trees in the last panel are starting to look worryingly unhealthy. O_o

... Really, was the bio-weapon-infected tank so bad? Maybe they should have just gotten out of its way, and let it stomp off into the jungle, instead of releasing the XVT. :P Maybe it would have just meandered around peacefully for a few years, having adventures! And maybe it would have stomped those meanies Boulder along the way. :P

Sometimes you've just got to go with your functional imperatives!
Greeb 4th Jun 2012, 11:17 PM edit delete reply
Oh, I hadn't noticed that! If that's the case, Jim and Mary may well not be out of danger yet, since the affected area is far outside the cloud radius.
view 4th Jun 2012, 11:20 PM edit delete reply
Well, if you nuke cyborg lich Hitler, everyone would say "was cyborg lich Hitler so bad, really?"
cattservant 4th Jun 2012, 11:23 PM edit delete reply
You mean nostalgia for the good old days?
Meh.Aloe 5th Jun 2012, 5:28 AM edit delete reply
Aw, but the bioweapon was just sitting there, minding its own business... It even tolerated Jim prodding around its home... Then this rude teenage robot shows up and starts physically pulling it out of its beloved tank! I'd be pretty upset too! It probably just wanted to walk its tank away in peace, find a new spot to bury it in some nice, moist soil, away from these undisciplined robot kids on the lawn... :P

Poor spider tank. :( I'm gonna start dreaming up spider tank fan fiction in mah head.
Gigan 5th Jun 2012, 5:35 AM edit delete reply
Pretty much. Really, there was foreshadowing of the octopi looking at Mary as their mother figure just before this, and the landwalker was likely made of some tough stuff. So yeah, block shell with body, save Mom.

Actually, what I was expecting to happen was that the shell would pierce the chestplate and be caught by the back armor and sealed inside by some leakstop system, containing the trace XVT in with the soon to be dead octopi. Mind you, there's still probably some sort of emotion over heroic sacrifice in the future, just not how I foresaw it.

Not quite sure how the sketch stuff works, do I e-mail or something?

The shell that was fired looks flat-ended, even before it hit the Landwalker (doom approaching picture). I'm guessing that the cannon was for ranged delivery of the XVT, possiblity that part of the 'cleanup' these tanks did involved engaging the creations at range.

If robotics were so advanced, I'm going to guess that a large portion of the troops/defenses were robotic/mechanized. In such a case, having XVT onboard wouldn't be for anti-personnel work... Makes the tank more an, er, anti-biotic? :)
cattservant 5th Jun 2012, 6:18 AM edit delete reply
The round appeared to be rather low velocity too, which would be ideal for widespread dispensing of the XVT.
