Thank you, thank you, thank you and ow!!!

Miwa is going to be very busy rehabilitating the local environment for the foreseeable future!

(And Miwa's house is a fairly long distance from the spider tank excavation site. So just damn!!!)

Pssh. Forget XVT contamination that's a normal summer around where I live. Heat kills all the vegetation, people fill the pools because of vegetation killing heat, cryptosporidium shows up and people get sick, then its suddenly autumn.

By the way, Miwa is looking goooooood. She should spend more time in the water. It's her look. Especially when she's miffed.
cattservant 7th Jun 2012, 9:38 PM edit delete reply
It's either dry or wet here in the Lake District of the Florida Alps.

Maaaan I knew the story was going to get all depressing.... Please prove me wrong.

And two things: if the trees are dying from the XVT shouldn't she be... not alive/healthy?

Also, if the creature was created to beat XVT, why did they beat it with XVT?
cattservant 7th Jun 2012, 10:17 PM edit delete reply
"The eater" spent its whole life living in a buried derelict spider tank and probably wasn't very good a being a WMD.
JasperWB 7th Jun 2012, 10:19 PM edit delete reply
Because the old anti-XVT slime took it over, which is probably the second worst substance in this world compared to XVT. And I don't think they ever actually deployed any XVT besides the little in the tanks ammo which I think was just used to redirect what the slime was going after. Made it stay on the tank so they could blast it to hell and take out the slime.

As for Miwa, I'm not sure. She may actually be killing herself here because she doesn't care anymore. Or she doesn't care if it affects her it not.
Guest 7th Jun 2012, 10:44 PM edit delete reply
I doubt that's what she's doing, but if she was that'd be a shitty way to kill off one of the three main characters. Haha
Whumpinstick 8th Jun 2012, 8:00 AM edit delete reply
XVT was designed to kill bio-weapons. "The Eater" was designed to try to survive a XVT attack not by being immune to XVT but by hiding and replicating quicker than the XVT could be effective. Since they attacked "The Eater" with XVT before it had time to do anything it should (hopefully) be destroyed.

Where is Miwa hanging out?
JasperWB 7th Jun 2012, 10:20 PM edit delete reply
Her personal grotto.
cattservant 7th Jun 2012, 10:28 PM edit delete reply
That sounds a bit suggestive doesn't it?

See (Page 221 panel 5) for its original appearance.

Aww, someone needs to give her a pillow. Miwa needs a nap.
pancake 7th Jun 2012, 11:05 PM edit delete reply
what's all that black stuff leaking all over?
just a thought, if the trees are dead here doesn't that mean Miwa's in danger as well?
cattservant 7th Jun 2012, 11:08 PM edit delete reply
Cleanup bacteria neutralizes XVT. The 'black stuff' is probably the vegetable equivalent of corpse liquor.
pancake 7th Jun 2012, 11:16 PM edit delete reply
that's disgusting..
JasperWB 7th Jun 2012, 11:16 PM edit delete reply
Yeah I'm pretty sure at this point that Miwa isn't looking to die or get hurt, but she doesn't give a damn about anything anymore. I know that feeling well.

She's not in danger, but it's pretty nasty.

Like week-overdue romaine lettuce!

My chosen profession in life is chemical engineer. I'm curious if you've worked out what would be the real-life mechanism behind XVT. Is it some sort of metabolic catalyst? Enzyme? I'm wondering how it could be so pervasive if it was consumed in the process of killing things. Or is it just super fucking concentrated? Tiny little bits are really good at killing animals, but plants tend to require a larger dose. If you don't have an answer, that's perfectly fine too, it's just my curiosity forced me to ask.

edit - God damn that must suck either way. She had a nice thing going there.

editedit - You change your avatar very often, cattservant. :)

It's not a proper chemical at all. It's a particle which rapidly forms very unstable bonds with carbon, breaking any carbon chains apart without staying bonded to them.

It doesn't get consumed in the process, or, rather, it is un-consumed after a tiny fraction of an instant.

It's basically the same stuff the ripper beam is made out of, except that the ripper beam's content stays consumed.

Oh god. You've imagined regenerating free radicals.
cattservant 8th Jun 2012, 12:39 AM edit delete reply
Yes. It comes from working for Cats all these years!
Guest 8th Jun 2012, 2:02 AM edit delete reply
Still a little confused.

The slime creature that was in the tank was created to destroy XVT, but in order to stop it they melted Texas with XVT? Where does this cycle begin?
view 8th Jun 2012, 2:15 AM edit delete reply
It wasn't intended to destroy XVT, just grow fast to a size that XVT bombs couldn't reasonably stop. But the government unleashed an unreasonable amount of XVT...
JasperWB 8th Jun 2012, 2:45 AM edit delete reply
Who was the government deploying XVT against? Another government? Couldn't be its own citizens, its far too powerful with too many drawbacks for that kind of use.

Unless...there was a civil war or revolution that caused a schism in existing power. That would also explain how an apocalypse came to be. No holds barred with everything to lose.
Meh.Aloe 8th Jun 2012, 4:28 AM edit delete reply
I think it did use it against its own citizens -- and it did fall as a result (or, rather, this was probably one of the factors contributing to this fall). This was suggested in that flashback conversation, where IIRC the comment about how the government was melting the West Coast for no reason was followed by the statement that it wouldn't last.

Of course, it seems Jim was wrong about them not having a reason...

Now, who released the bio-weapons in the first place?
Gigan 8th Jun 2012, 4:10 AM edit delete reply
Ah, I didn't realize that Miwa's place was open to the air (thought it was like a dome or something). Guess so. Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the octopus bought it, with that kind of spread.
Meddy 8th Jun 2012, 4:37 AM edit delete reply
I don't get how the XVT propagated from the lake to there. And especially not how it propagated faster than cleanup bacteria could be deployed to chokepoints, it if was in the water.
G-Rock 8th Jun 2012, 5:10 AM edit delete reply
I think XVT was meant as a last-ditch effort against their other bioweapons, kind of like having a revolver ready in case your attack bear turns on you.

Judging by the previous page's conversation, and the fact that the title of this chapter is fish soup, it may may be more than safe to say at least one if not more of the cute octopi are no longer. :(

love love love her house!

also tits
G-Rock 8th Jun 2012, 11:00 AM edit delete reply
Tits may or may not have been necessary to pretty up the house at the moment. Also yay for staying up all night to write a paper, but not really!
JasperWB 8th Jun 2012, 12:57 PM edit delete reply
If I had tits, I'd totally just sit around exactly like Miwa here. All the time. Just not giving a damn even when I was in a good mood. I think tits were designed to be flaunted in this "who gives a damn, they're tits look if you want, whatever" manner.
Felix 8th Jun 2012, 11:04 AM edit delete reply
Love how it's hard to tell when Miwa's being contemplative or when she's just not giving a damn.
