Done with the over-the-top sad stuff!

I didn't like these pages for several reasons, one being that they feature "cheats" - large volumes of no art, lots of repeated panels...

But those are what I needed to use to give the right impressions.

Is this the first or second saddest page?*

*(Page 195, A.N.)

I dunno, what is it compared to yesterday?
cattservant 13th Jun 2012, 9:48 PM edit delete reply
Probably first, it's more subtle than yesterday's page.
Kain Yusanagi 11th Feb 2013, 1:03 PM edit delete reply
And I have to say this was a strong page, in the feels department, but the use of the cheat copypasta really dampened it. Would probably have gone through better if it was two panels, one, upper left, triangular, them holding each other, echo cut to a triangle in the lower right, (Could also be darker, ie they'd been holding each other for a significant period of time; Could also be done by having the lights be dimmed, which also shows the darkness of the scene that they just experienced shown here) and then the text. It shows a passage of time function, and it keeps the image solid, large, and direct without any cheats. More work in the end, though, so that is a downside.

Note that while this is my first comment, not really wanting to comment prior, especially with old conversations I couldn't really take part in now, this is something I really wanted to remark upon because everything else has felt so natural and well drawn, only for this to suddenly be a bit jarring. Looking forward to finishing up the rest of the comic before morning proper.

It doesn't matter... All were very effective in expressing different kinds of grief.
CyberSkull 21st Jun 2012, 5:48 AM edit delete reply
The prior page is more anger than grief, this is not as intense but still just crushing.
cattservant 21st Jun 2012, 5:54 AM edit delete reply
It's knowing the impending duration of the feeling (emotion) that amplifies the sorrow.
Phuji 13th Jun 2012, 9:34 PM edit delete reply
But... but.... we can rebuild them? We can... /cry
Phuji 13th Jun 2012, 9:41 PM edit delete reply
I've been holding off on just asking you but... if you have time for another Avatar I'd love one of my own.
Some kind of stoic, grumpy old man that isn't old yet would be a pretty accurate description. Preferably in Esteban dimensions.
JasperWB 13th Jun 2012, 10:04 PM edit delete reply
Oh snap. You make those fast! I see why you like doing them over full sketches. Wow. Even on that scale I'd take quite a bit. And I wouldn't even use all the steps or techniques!
Phuji 13th Jun 2012, 10:35 PM edit delete reply
That'll do, view, that'll do.

Whooo I have a face now! It's exciting.

Thank you for the Avatar.

Brings back the memory of my cat mittens dying... snf

I think this is an excellent page view. You can really hear and feel the silence. I can almost imagine a wall clock ticking away gently but rhythmically in the background. And each time anyone makes a new noise it seems so unimaginably loud in contrast.

Reminds me of time spent at my great-grandmother's house.
elfolampo 13th Jun 2012, 10:24 PM edit delete reply
Uh, exactly, how much was redrawn in each panel? Apart from the characters, most of the rest of the panels seem the same... but I could swear the upper part of the window has atleast 4 different models.
view 13th Jun 2012, 10:43 PM edit delete reply
Not a lot, just a tiny bit.
Jst56strong 13th Jun 2012, 10:54 PM edit delete reply
So the octopi are all dead and so are the 2, Hansel and the other kid. Am I missing anyone?
view 13th Jun 2012, 11:06 PM edit delete reply
Huh? Hansel and the other kid? What are you talking about?
Jst56strong 14th Jun 2012, 1:00 AM edit delete reply
NM I just reread and saw where it said no human and no robot deaths. Sorry for the annoyance.
G-Rock 13th Jun 2012, 11:23 PM edit delete reply
I understand your criticisms, view, but I think they only hold up when viewing the panels as individual works, and not as a seamless part of the story. I think it's necessary in order to get across Mary's stabilization and Jim's patience. A little lump in the throat tells me you did a good job.
view 13th Jun 2012, 11:43 PM edit delete reply
That was the aim.
klondike 13th Jun 2012, 11:40 PM edit delete reply
Wow, today's panel was... intense.

I suppose we'll all miss the lose of the octopii to the XVT.

Repetition is a powerful tool, and this is a solid use of it, though I feel that this would have a better effect at a higher resolution so you could see the subtle changes between the panels.

Yeah, I didn't realize they'd get so incredibly hard to see when I shrunk it down. Been a while since I've dropped the ball on the resize.

I just finished reading the whole comic (but not in one sitting, haha) and I have to say I am very pleased with the way you're telling this story! :) I can't wait to see where you take the story next. Cheers!
AlfaFoxtail 14th Jun 2012, 8:32 AM edit delete reply
...ok so i decided to feel curious on what will happen with her character rather than be sad that the octopi died

Love the comic, and the emotions you build. I've been following since about page 50 of Cheer, and still love to see your artwork and story, rather than the porny stuff. Anyways keep up the good work, and if it's not to much to ask could I possibly get an avatar of a hooded figure, either way, keep on doing this epicness!(Tha'ts a word now cause I said so)
view 14th Jun 2012, 10:00 PM edit delete reply
Thanks, and here's a scary hooded cyclops guy for ya.
