The exchange between Mary and Miwa is actually a lot more complicated than it looks on the surface. Mary's a bit confused because Miwa hasn't been very civil to her in... well, ever. I decided, after some thinking, to not clarify that in the comic itself, and to let the readers realize what's happening after they've read the whole comic. Similarly, it'll be a lot of chapters before they realize exactly why Miwa bothered to be civil... so it ended up a really tepid page, with a lot of subtext NOBODY CAN NOTICE.

Actually, a lot of the last pages make a lot more sense after you read much later chapters, so I guess I should probably focus on some pages that work the first time through. :P

Well, that's the weakness of the webcomic medium for you. In other comics that's not a problem - you can just flip to the next page.
I dunno if you are more focused on the final result than the day-to-day reading of this. From your former, (ahem) different comics, you seem to like building things up a lot. This is not a bad thing imo, it means that the full glory is only available on a full read through... but so what? We have time.

Mmm, yeah, but views and comments take a nose dive if I slow down the pacing at all.

Yeah that's the tough thing about posting a day at a time but I think it's better to have a comic that is good to read in one sitting than entertaining everyday. And usually when it is entertaining and full of action everyday, if you read it all together at once it seems too busy or confusing and rushed or fast-paced which isn't worth the tradeoff.

It's tough to balance it...

Forgive me for disagreeing... but these last five pages clearly demonstrate Mary's social standing... She is an "outsider." Not by her own volition, but because she is a Rate Buster. Her loneliness is made worse by her unanswered feelings for Jim...

I think you are conveying the mood elegantly... keep it up!

You like theories!

I don't know that Mary is any more efficient than her coworkers, although it may seem so because I'm following Mary and not her coworkers, so you see more of her work and less of theirs.

Anyway, elegant or not, time to kick it up a few inches.

I do... and your work, Ms Modest, is both challenging and enjoyable. So there :P

Have we met Jianguo yet?

No, and actually, I don't even have him scripted in. I'm not sure you'll EVER meet him. Ha ha, I didn't even think about it.

The last two pictures create a nice stereoscopic effect I noticed. Not perfect, but still a pretty cool coincidence I think.

Interesting... never was any good at those sorts of things.

Well, as a guy coming from the future, and having read the entire comic, then immediately starting over again to pick up the subtexts, this page is perfect!
